Rock of Ages producer Matthew Weaver may adapt his story of growing up with a gay dad as a Broadway musical, according to the New York Daily News. Weaver was raised in Manhattan in the 1970s and ‘80s by his openly gay dad, former Paramount Pictures marketing chief, Gordon Weaver. Weaver said would like to see the story as a TV series, a Broadway musical, or a movie.
“It’s a little Auntie Mame, a little La Cage Aux Folles and a little Kramer vs. Kramer,” said Weaver of his childhood.
During his time at Paramount, Gordon Weaver oversaw the marketing of the hit films (many of which would become stage musicals) Grease, Saturday Night Fever, Footloose and Flashdance. He took on raising a child when gay parenting was practically “unheard of.” Matthew Weaver recalled times his dad would show up to socceer games in a mink coat or let Matthew use the limo while Gordon and friends partied at Studio 54.
Matthew Weaver’s Rock of Ages film is scheduled for release on June 1. The Broadway production is currently playing at the Helen Hayes Theatre. Weaver’s other producing credits include The Heartbreak Kid, Hesher, Pretty Persuasion and Barry Munday.
