Casting has been announced for the upcoming Broadway production of Newsies. As previously announced, the show will star Jeremy Jordan as rebellious newsboy Jack Kelly in the Broadway mounting of this new Disney musical. Directed by Jeff Calhoun and choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, Newsies will play a limited engagement beginning March 15 at the Nederlander Theatre. Opening night is set for March 29, with the final performance scheduled for June 10.
Joining Jordan are John Dossett (2003 revival of Gypsy) as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay (Little House on the Prairie) as Katherine Plumber, Ben Fankhauser (Spring Awakening) as Davey, Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Mary Poppins) as Crutchie with Lewis Grosso (Mary Poppins) and Matthew Schechter (Elf) alternating in the role of Les. Dossett, Lindsay, Fankhauser and Keenan-Bolger will all reprise the roles they created in the Paper Mill Playhouse production last fall. Casting for the role of Medda will be announced shortly.
The ensemble of Newsies will feature Aaron J. Albano, Mark Aldrich, Tommy Bracco, John E. Brady, Ryan Breslin, Kevin Carolan, Caitlyn Caughell, Kyle Coffman, Mike Faist, Michael Fatica, Julie Foldesi, Garett Hawe, Thayne Jasperson, Evan Kasprzak, Jess Le Protto, Stuart Marland, Andy Richardson, Jack Scott, Ryan Steele, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Ephraim Sykes, Laurie Veldheer, Alex Wong and Stuart Zagnit.
Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Newsies features the film's original music as well as additional songs by composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman, and a book by four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. Inspired by the real events of the Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies follows a young New York City newsboy who leads a group of orphans in a protest against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
