British writer Heidi Thomas is working on a retooled book for a Broadway-bound production of the musical Gigi, according to U.K.'s The Stage. Gigi is an Oscar-winning 1958 film by director Vincente Minnelli and features music and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe. The film was adapted as a short-lived Broadway musical in 1973 starring Karin Wolfe as Gigi. The new Gigi hopes to arrive in New York in the next two years. No director or casting has been announced.
Gigi tells the tale of a young Parisian girl at the turn of the 20th century being raised by two veteran courtesans to be the mistress of a wealthy young French man. However, Gigi throws a twist in their plans when she realizes she wants to be more than just the mistress to the man she loves.
Thomas received an Emmy nomination for her work on the popular BBC series Upstairs Downstairs. As a playwright, her work includes Shamrocks And Crocodiles, Indigo and Some Singing Blood. Her vast film and television credits include I Capture the Castle, Madame Bovary, Ballet Shoes and Cranford. Gigi will mark her first time working on a musical.
