The Hollywood Bowl will stage a production of Mel Brooks’ Tony Award-winning musical The Producers as part of their 2012 summer season. Based on the Oscar-winning 1968 film of the same name, The Producers will run from July 27 through 29. No cast has been announced at this time.
The Producers follows a down-on-his-luck Broadway producer and his mild-mannered accountant as they concoct a get-rich scheme to bilk their investors out of millions by producing the most notorious flop in history.
Originally starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, The Producers became a Broadway smash when it opened on April 19, 2001. Featuring a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan, music and lyrics by Brooks and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman, the show went on to win 12 Tony Awards and ran for 2,502 performances. Lane and Broderick later reprised their roles for a 2005 film adapation.
With a seating capacity of 18,000, the Hollywood Bowl is one of the largest natural amphitheaters in the United States. The Hollywood Bowl has presented starry productions of Rent and Hairpsray in past summers.
