Tony winner Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo are set to star in Can a Song Save Your Life, a movie musical written and directed by John Carney, accoding to the Hollywood Reporter. Carney is known for directing Once, the popular Irish indie film whose stage adaptation is headed to Broadway this spring.
Can a Song Save Your Life? tells the story of Gretta (Johansson) and her longtime boyfriend who move to New York to pursue their passion for music. Gretta's boyfriend however soon dumps her for the fame and fortune of a big solo contract. When a down-on-his-luck record producer (Ruffalo) stumbles upon Gretta singing in a local bar, he is immediately captivated by her raw talent and inspiring authenticity. Somewhere between friendship and their love of music, the two strangers strike a chord that captures the hearts of everyone around them, proving that every great story has its own soundtrack.
Johansson, who won a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in the 2010 revival of Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, has appeared in such films as Lost in Translation, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Iron Man 2 and The Black Dahlia. Ruffalo earned a Tony Award nomination for Awake and Sing! and an Oscar nomination for The Kids Are All Right. His other film credits include You Can Count on Me, 13 Going on 30, Sympathy for Delicious, The Brothers Bloom and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Ruffalo is also set to lead the upcoming film adaptation of Larry Kramer's The Normal Heart.
