As the infamous musical Carrie (based on the novel by Stephen King) begins terrorizing audiences at the Lucille Lortel Theatre, Broadway.com asked readers which other King novel they would like to see as a spooky Broadway musical. The results are in, and three of King’s most recognizable titles were among readers’ top choices to see adapted for the stage. Take a look at the results below!
1. The Shining – 23%
Stephen King’s haunting 1977 bestseller follows novelist Jack Torrance and his family during their snowy winter spent at the supernatural Overlook Hotel. Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film adaptation starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall earned a spot on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 most thrilling movies of all time.
2. Misery - 22%
The nailbitter Misery also tells the tale of a novelist who lost his way, only he was found by a deranged fan and murderess. The 1990 film adaptation won Kathy Bathes a Golden Globe and an Oscar for her portrayal of psychotic caregiver Annie Wilkes. As a musical, we imagine some of Broadway’s biggest leading ladies would vie for the role.
3. The Green Mile - 21%
King's 1996 novel The Green Mile centers around a death row corrections officer during the Great Depression and his unique relationship with a inmate who has supernatural healing powers. The Green Mile was also turned into an Oscar-nominated film in 1999 starring Tom Hanks.
