Tony Award winner Leslie Uggams has joined the Encores! cast of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Pipe Dream as Fauna, alongside previously announced stars Will Chase, Laura Osnes and Tom Wopat. Directed by Marc Bruni, the production will run March 28 through April 1 at New York City Center.
Based on John Steinbeck’s novel Sweet Thursday, Pipe Dream centers on outcasts in the Cannery Row bordellos and flophouses yearning for a better life. The show tells the story of the romance between Doc (Chase), a marine biologist, and Suzy (Osnes), a young woman who hitchhikes into town. Pipe Dream opened at the Shubert Theatre on November 30, 1955, and ran for 246 performances. The musical was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
Uggams received a Tony Award for her Broadway debut in Hallelujah, Baby! She also appeared on Broadway in Blues in the Night, Her First Roman, Jerry’s Girls, Anything Goes, King Headley II, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and most recently On Golden Pond.
Pipe Dream has been virtually absent from the American stage for more than two decades because of a technicality involving the underlying rights. The Encores! presentation will feature Robert Russell Bennett's newly restored orchestrations of R&H rarities including “All at Once You Love Her,” “The Next Time It Happens” and “Everybody’s Got a Home but Me.”
The production will also feature
James Clow, James Moye, Steve Routman and Stephen Wallem.
