Boyd Gaines and Margaret Colin will join previously announced star John Lithgow in Manhattan Theatre Club’s world premiere of David Auburn’s The Columnist. The play will now begin previews at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on April 4 and open on April 25, directed by Daniel Sullivan.
The Columnist is set in mid-century America, when columnists are kings and Joseph Alsop (Lithgow) wears the crown. Joe is beloved, feared and courted in equal measure by the Washington political world at whose center he sits. As the 1960s dawn and America undergoes dizzying change, the intense political drama embroiling Joe becomes deeply personal as well. Boyd will play Stewart, Joseph's brother, and Colin will take on the role of Susan, Joseph's wife.
Four-time Tony Award winner Gaines received the award for Gypsy, She Loves Me, The Heidi Chronicles and Contact and earned an additional nomination for Journey’s End. His other Broadway credits include Driving Miss Daisy, Pygmalion, Twelve Angry Men, Cabaret, The Show Off and Company.
Colin can currently be seen as Eleanor Waldorf on TV's Gossip Girl. She has appeared on Broadway in Arcadia, Old Acquaintance, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg and Jackie. Her many other TV credits include Once and Again, One Life to Live, Law and Order, Leg Work and Sibs.
