That’s a wrap for another week on Broadway! What have we learned? Well, the original stars of Wicked sure are keeping busy, for one thing, and Audra McDonald would get smoochy with a co-star, for another. Read on below to find out we’re taking away from this busy week on the Great White Way.
Audra McDonald Would Switch Teams for Kate Walsh
In a candid Side by Side by Susan Blackwell, Audra McDonald joked that she would make out with her Private Practice co-star Kate Walsh. “Sure, she’s hot!” McDonald shrugged. The Porgy and Bess star added that Walsh is not the only attractive Private Practice hot doc. “All the girls on the show had girl crushes on each other.” Awesome.
Elphie and Glinda Are Hitting the Road
Original Wicked stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth are hitting the road this summer. Wait, not together! While “Kridina” (as their former co-star Norbert Leo Butz called them) will be making stops in Texas, Philly and New York City, they are not performing together. Oh well, Wicked-heads, it’s all (for) good!
Nick Jonas Wants to be a Jersey Boy
Headlining How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying? Check. Guest-starring on NBC’s Smash? Check. International superstardom? Oh right, check. But Nick Jonas isn’t done yet. This week, the pop star told Broadway.com he’d love to play Frankie Valli in Broadway’s Jersey Boys, a role that isn’t a far cry from the Italian, New Jersey-born singer’s own charmed life. And judging by Jonas’ impressive Broadway track record, it’s safe to say the pop star might “Walk Like a Man” to the August Wilson Theatre… If Kristin Chenoweth doesn’t scoop him up first.
Sondheim Forgot Where Middle C Is
Stephen Sondheim is at work on a new musical with Venus in Fur playwright David Ives, but he’s a little “rusty.” The legendary composer admitted he is having a little trouble getting back into the swing of things. “I sit at the piano and think, 'Where's middle C?’” That’s OK, Steve. We’re pretty sure it’s right next to middle D. Good luck!
Darren Criss, Kermit and a Rainbow Save Oscar Day
Muppet fans everywhere were disappointed when it was announced that the fuzzy puppets would not be performing at the Academy Awards. Darren Criss to the rescue! The Glee hunk (and Broadway alum!) joined Kermit the Frog on E!’s Oscar pre-show for a little performance of their own. The adorable tux-clad duo sang a touching rendition of “The Rainbow Connection,” then took turns gushing about each other. Kermit’s more than a Muppet: He’s a Gleek!
Theater Nerds Throw the Best Parties
What do you call a soiree with a Les Miserables flash mob? Best. Party. Ever. Reality TV star and celebrity stylist Brad Goreski recently had just such a shindig. His partner, Gary Janetti, surprised him by getting their nearest and dearest to sing “One Day More” for their anniversary. Why? 1. Why not?! 2. These theater nerds knew it was love when they were singing the Les Miz score together within 12 hours of meeting. Good luck topping that adorable stunt next year, Gary!
Christopher J. Hanke Frumps Up Michael Urie’s Dressing Room
Christopher J. Hanke may have retired as Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, but his good design taste lives on backstage at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. This week, Broadway.com checked out the dressing room of Hanke’s successor, Michael Urie, and noticed a familiar-looking furry rug. Nope, Urie didn’t swipe the snazzy carpet from Hanke’s dressing room (although that would be a very Frumpy thing to do). Hanke bought it for Urie as a gift after New Frump eyed it in Old Frump’s dressing room. Those Frumps aren’t half bad!
Emmy Winner Cynthia Nixon Does Not Own a TV
Though she’s a Tony winner and has appeared on the big screen, Cynthia Nixon is best known as a star of TV’s Sex and the City. Here’s the catch: The bald and beautiful Wit headliner has not owned a television since 1986. “I find that when there’s a TV, you end up watching stuff you are not really interested in,” Nixon told Broadway.com. What would Miranda say? (If you don’t understand that question, you must not have a TV either.)
Norbert Leo Butz Can’t Pass Up A Dirty Joke
Two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz is a dirty rotten scoundrel indeed! In his Broadway.com Ask a Star, the How I Learned to Drive actor let it all hang out with a “moose knuckle” (don’t ask!) joke and an eyebrow-raising “dirty Sanchez” crack. Aw, Norbert. You are so not G-rated. And we love you for it.
Kristin Chenoweth Is a Secret Hedwig Fan
Though her own resume is mostly family-friendly, Kristin Chenoweth's taste isn't totally mainstream. The Tony winner recently confessed her love for cult musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which co-starred fellow GCB actress Miriam Shor. “I went to see her three times,” Chenoweth said of Shor, who played ex-drag queen Yitzhak in the show. “I couldn’t believe that was a woman,” Chenoweth exclaimed. Kristin loves a show about a transexual punk rock girl from East Berlin? Ja!
