The first Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Evita begins performances at the Marquis Theatre on March 12. The production stars music sensation Ricky Martin as Che, Tony winer Michael Cerveris as Juan Peron and Argentine actress Elena Roger as the title character. Evita, directed by Michael Grandage, officially opens on April 5.
Evita charts the rise and fall of Eva Peron, the one-time charismatic and glamorous young First Lady of Argentina, and includes songs such as “Buenos Aires,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.”
The musical opened on Broadway in 1979 with Patti LuPone and Mandy Patinkin in the roles of Eva and Che. A 1996 film adaptation starred Madonna and Antonio Banderas as the lead characters. This current production originated in 2006 on the West End, where Roger also starred in the title role.
The creative team for Evita will feature choreography by Rob Ashford, scenic and costume design by Christopher Oram, lighting design by Neil Austin, sound design by Mick Potter, wig and hair design by Richard Mawbey, projection design by Zachary Borovay and music supervision/direction by Kristen Blodgette.
