Twenty years after hitting movie theaters, Newsies arrives on Broadway with Disney's new stage adaptation of the cult classic. Starring Jeremy Jordan as Jack Kelly, the new musical begins performances March 15 at the Nederlander Theatre, and will officially open March 29. Directed by Jeff Calhoun and featuring choreography by Christopher Gattelli, the limited engagement is set to run through June 10.
Based on the 1992 film of the same name, Newsies features the movie's original music as well as additional songs by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman, in addition to a book by four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. Inspired by the real events of the Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies follows a young New York City newsboy (Jordan) who leads a group of orphans in a protest against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
Joining Jordan are co-stars John Dossett (Joseph Pulitzer), Kara Lindsay (Katherine Plumber), Capathia Jenkins (Medda), Ben Fankhauser (Davey), Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Crutchie) and Lewis Grosso and Matthew Schechter (alternating in the role of Les).
Rounding out the cast of Newsies are Aaron J. Albano, Mark Aldrich, Tommy Bracco, John E. Brady, Ryan Breslin, Kevin Carolan, Caitlyn Caughell, Kyle Coffman, Mike Faist, Michael Fatica, Julie Foldesi, Garett Hawe, Thayne Jasperson, Evan Kasprzak, Jess Le Protto, Stuart Marland, Andy Richardson, Jack Scott, Ryan Steele, Brendon Stimson, Nick Sullivan, Ephraim Sykes, Laurie Veldheer, Alex Wong and Stuart Zagnit.
