Carla Gugino is set to star in the upcoming six-episode USA drama Political Animals alongside Tony nominee Sigourney Weaver, according to Deadline.com. Created by Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark, the new series will premiere this summer. No further casting or filming dates have been announced.
Based in Washington, D.C., Political Animals is the story of Elaine Barrish (Weaver), a divorced former First Lady and recently appointed Secretary of State. In the series, Barrish grapples with both the pain of her failed marriage and losing the presidential nomination. Barrish battles with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Susan Berg (Gugino), who is intent on destroying the Secretary of State’s career.
Gugino recently starred in the Broadway mounting of The Road to Mecca at the American Airlines Theatre. She has also appeared on Broadway in Desire Under the Elms and After the Fall. Gugino's film and TV credits include Entourage, Californication and Justified.
Weaver received a Tony nod for Hurlyburly. She has also appeared on Broadway in Sex and Longing and The Constant Wife. Her other notable film credits include Alien, Working Girl, Ghostbusters and Prayers For Bobby.
