Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider will team up with Tony winners Patti LuPone and Bebe Neuwirth, in addition to Broadway veterans Cyndi Lauper, Clay Aiken and more on his new album Dee Does Broadway. The heavy metal singer’s forthcoming album will feature a selection of classic Broadway hits. Dee Does Broadway is set for release on May 8 on the record label Razor & Tie. Snider himself appeared in Broadway's Rock of Ages, which features music from his band, in the fall of 2010.
Tracks on the album include LuPone singing a a medley of “Tonight” and “Somewhere” from West Side Story. Priscilla Queen of the Desert stars Will Swenson, Tony Sheldon and Nick Adams will accompany Snider on “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame” from South Pacific. Snider and Neuwirth will duet on “Whatever Lola Wants” from Damn Yankees. The album also features Lauper singing “Big Spender” from Sweet Charity, Aiken singing “Luck Be a Lady Tonight” from Guys and Dolls, Mark Wood of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra playing violin on “Music of the Night” from The Phantom of the Opera, and Dee’s son Jesse “Blaze” Snider singing “This Joint is Jumping” from Ain’t Misbehavin’. Songs from Cabaret, Chicago, The Threepenny Opera, Anything Goes and Sweeney Todd will also be included on the album.
“There are many who think doing an album of rocked out show tunes is pure insanity on my part,” Snider said in a press statement. “Apparently, they haven’t seen any photos of me from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Could I have been in a more theatrical band? Ever since I was a kid, I’d heard the real power inherent in a lot of songs from musicals and this record gives me the chance to show it.”
