Casting is set for the upcoming Encores! production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Pipe Dream. The production, directed by Marc Bruni and starring the previously announced Laura Osnes, Will Chase, Tom Wopat and Leslie Uggams, will run at New York City Center March 28 through April 1.
Joining the quartet of stars is James Clow, Philip Hernández, James Moye, Steve Routman and Stephen Wallem, as well as Matthew Bauman, Jack Doyle, Lora Lee Gayer, James Harkness, Jessica Hershberg, Emily Hsu, Cara Kjellman, Denis Lambert, Analisa Leaming, Jay Lusteck, Linda Mugleston, Shannon M. O’Bryan, Monica L. Patton, Richard Pruitt, Vincent Rodriguez III, Kelly Sheehan, Martín Solá, Charlie Sutton, Nicholas Ward and Victor James Wisehart.
Based on John Steinbeck’s novel Sweet Thursday, Pipe Dream centers on outcasts in the Cannery Row bordellos and flophouses yearning for a better life. The show follows the romance between Doc (Chase), a marine biologist, and Suzy (Osnes), a young woman who hitchhikes into town. Pipe Dream opened at the Shubert Theatre on November 30, 1955, and ran for 246 performances. The musical was nominated for nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical.
