Cass Morgan will headline the concert staging of the musical adaptation of Harold and Maude at the York Theatre Company’s Musicals in Mufti: The Tom Jones Festival series. The musical will run April 13-15 at the Theatre at St. Peter’s.
Harold and Maude will feature Morgan (Memphis, Mary Poppins) as Maude, Matt Dengler (A Little Night Music) as Harold, Donna Lynne Champlin (Billy Elliot), Donna English (Lend Me a Tenor) and Steve Routman (La Bete). Based on the 1972 film with a screenplay by Colin Higgins, Harold and Maude features direction by Carl Andress, book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Joseph Thalken.
Harold & Maude tells the story of Harold Millegan (played on screen by Bud Cort), a 19 year-old fascinated by death and all its trappings, who meets Maude Parsons (originally played by Ruth Gordon), a vivacious and eccentric 79 year-old widow with hobbies that border on the felonious. With her unbreakable spirit, she becomes a beacon in the life of this self-destructive rich boy, and their unlikely romance awakens Harold to the beauty, possibility and meaning of life.
The York Theatre Company’s Musicals in Mufti: The Tom Jones Festival will also include a production of Roadside, featuring a book and lyrics by Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt. Directed by David Glenn Armstrong, Roadside is set to run March 16-18. The cast includes Nick Wyman (Catch Me If You Can), Ryan Alexander, Erick Devine (Seussical), Janine DiVita (Odyssey, The Musical), Jamie LaVerdiere (The Producers), Daniel C. Levine (Les Miserables) and Ed Watts (The Fantasticks).
