Disney’s Newsies, based on the 1992 film of the same name, opens on Broadway March 29. The production, directed by Jeff Calhoun and starring Jeremy Jordan and Kara Lindsay, plays the Nederlander Theatre through August 19.
Stars of the cult film including Max Cassella and the original director Kenny Ortega are expected to turn out for the musical’s Broadway bow. Also expected to welcome the newsboys to New York are Lara Spencer, Tommy Tune, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mo Rocca, Marilu Henner, Moises Kaufman, Book of Mormon co-director Casey Nicholaw, Evita choreographer Rob Ashford and Tony-winning director Bart Sher.
Newsies features the movie's original music as well as additional songs by Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman, in addition to a book by four-time Tony winner Harvey Fierstein and choreography by Christopher Gattelli. Inspired by the real events of the Newsboy Strike of 1899, Newsies follows a young New York City newsboy (Jordan) who leads a group of orphans in a protest against Joseph Pulitzer, William Randolph Hearst and other powerful newspaper publishers.
In addition to Jordan and Lindsay, the musical stars John Dossett, Capathia Jenkins, Ben Fankhauser, Andrew Keenan-Bolger, and Lewis Grosso and Matthew Schechter.
