NBC’s Broadway-themed series Smash will release a soundtrack album, The Music of Smash, on May 1. The 13-track album includes original songs from the show's Marilyn musical like “The 20th Century Fox Mambo” and “Let Me Be Your Star,” alongside covers of Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Jessie J’s “Who You Are,” and Michael Buble's "Haven't Met You Yet" (performed by guest star Nick Jonas.)
Smash centers on Broadway newcomer Karen Cartwright (Katharine McPhee) and showbiz vet Ivy Lynn (Megan Hilty). Both actresses are vying for the lead role of Marilyn in the musical of the same name. The series details the process of bringing a Broadway musical to life, and features original music by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
In addition to McPhee and Hilty (who recently signed her own solo recorind deal), Smash stars Emmy winner Debra Messing as Julia Houston, Jack Davenport as Derek Wills, Christian Borle (current star of Peter and the Starcatcher) as Tom Levitt, Raza Jaffrey as Dev Sundaram, Tony nominee Brian d’Arcy James as Frank Houston, Jaime Cepero as Ellis Tancharoen and Anjelica Huston as Eileen Rand.
The series was recently renewed for a second season.
