Time flies when Broadway is having fun, and another week on the Great White Way is already behind us. From news of a favorite Tony Awards host’s return to the unsung successes of some Naked Boys, there’s been a lot to learn in the last seven days. Read on below to find out what!
Neil Patrick Harris Will Work for Broadway Tickets
He’s back! Neil Patrick Harris will host the Tony Awards this year, making it his third time hosting in four years. Sure, it’s a night of glitz and fabulous Broadway glamour, but Harris has ulterior motives. “Not only will I be shining a spotlight on the best that Broadway has to offer,” Harris said, “But hopefully I’ll score some free house seats to a show or five.” OK, Neil, we'll see what we can do—if you rap for us again.
Amy Adams Will Enchant the Woods of Central Park
Newly announced Into the Woods star Amy Adams made a splash playing a Disney princess in Enchanted, but she’s not joining the beloved Sondheim musical of fairy tale characters as Cinderella. Instead, she will star as the acerbic, world-weary Baker’s Wife in the Shakespeare in the Park production. Don’t worry though; she still gets it on with a prince. Here's hoping that’s in all her contracts now.
Jonathan Groff Will Paint L.A. Red
Tony nominee and Broadway darling Jonathan Groff is Westward bound to star in the Los Angeles premiere of John Logan’s Red. Groff will play painter Mark Rothko (Alfred Molina)’s assistant Ken, a role for which Eddie Redmayne earned a 2010 Tony Award. A cutie like Groff, shirtless, artsy and covered in red paint? Pick us up at LAX.
Don’t Tell Mama! Angela Lansbury Does a Damn Good Sally Bowles
In what can only be deemed the photo of the season, Broadway.com photographer Bruce Glikas captured five-time Tony winner Angela Lansbury showing off her Fosse moves! At the opening night of her latest Broadway outing, a revival of Gore Vidal's The Best Man, Lansbury borrowed a bowler hat from co-star James Earl Jones and channeled her inner Sally Bowles, the eccentric nightclub singer from Cabaret. Just call her Angie with a G.
Andrew Garfield Goes Commando
He’s baring his soul on stage in Broadway’s Death of a Salesman, but Andrew Garfield is baring something else entirely as the star of upcoming action film Spider-Man. On a recent episode of Ellen, Garfield revealed what he wears under his skintight Spidey suit: absolutely nothing. “It’s terrifying to put on,” he said, especially with paparazzi lurking around set. “Knowing that your keister is being shot from many different angles makes you very uncomfortable.” Speak for yourself, Andrew. We're very comfortable with shots of your keister.
Rory O'Malley Cheers Up in a Weird Way
Rory O’Malley always has a mile-wide smile, but sometimes even the chipper Mormon star needs a boost—whatever it takes. “It’s a ‘dance bodybag,’ I think is the technical term,” O’Malley recently said about a shiny blue lycra-esque sack in his dressing room. “Sometimes when I’m feeling down I just put on my bag and I work on some routines,” he joked, before doing exactly that for our camera. Whenever we’re feeling down, Rory, we’re going to watch that video.
Chicago Was Good for Bebe Neuwirth's Self-Esteem
Two-time Tony winner Bebe Neuwirth recently told Broadway.com that she’s “not a big fan” of her looks, but that there was a time when she felt like a million bucks: her Chicago days. “I will say that I was in the best shape of my life when I played Velma Kelly,” the A Midsummer Night's Dream star said. “And my costume—how can I say this?—let that shape be appreciated! Physically, I was in my prime.” Who needs a trainer when you have the "Cell Block Tango"?
Celia Keenan-Bolger Never Wants to Grow Up
From her Broadway breakout as Olive Ostrovsky in Spelling Bee to her current role as Molly in Peter and the Starcatcher, Celia Keenan-Bolger has made quite a career of playing tweens and younger. And the 34-year-old actress is loving it too much to stop now! “That would be fun!" Keenan-Bolger told Broadway.com, when asked if she'd play the title character in Peter Pan on Broadway. "I do love that show." Think we can make this happen by clapping our hands together and wishing real hard?
P-Town Owes Naked Boys Singing Big Time
Naked Boys Singing is so much more than just, well, naked boys singing. It's a revolution! “It was a very controversial production,” director Tom D’Angora told Broadway.com about the show's original production in Provincetown. “There was an old blue law on the records so they tried to close us down,” he said. “But we took it to court, we won, we changed the laws. And now pee-pees are out everywhere in P-town!” We think what he meant to say was, "You're welcome."
Adam Pascal Went Into Full Metrosexual Mode for Aida
When original Rent stars Adam Pascal and Daphne Rubin-Vega recently reunited for first time in five years, they did what we all do: tried to remember what happened the last time they met. “Was it in the nail salon?” Pascal asked, before elaborating. “I was having my eyelashes tinted.” Rubin-Vega was more than happy to pick up the story. “You were just head-to-toe RuPaul-ed out,” she said with a laugh about Pascal, who was then starring as Egyptian soldier Radames in Broadway's Aida. Well, a soldier should be fierce, right?
