Tate Donovan, Josh Hamilton, Heather Burns, David Pittu and Anthony Arkin will star in the forthcoming world premiere of Medieval Play, written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. The Signature Center production will begin performances May 15 at the Irene Diamond Stage at off-Broadway’s Pershing Square Signature Center. Opening night is set for June 7. Medieval Play will perform a limited engagement through June 24. Additional casting will be announced shortly.
In Lonergan’s new comedy, two French mercenary knights set out on a quest for relative moral redemption against the classic comic background of late 14th century ecclesiastical politics. Medieval Play is a story of friendship, love, noble feats of arms, indiscriminate brutality, the progressive refinement of medieval table manners and the general decline of the chivalric ideal at the onset of the Great Papal Schism of 1378.
Donovan made his Broadway debut in Picnic and has appeared in Good People, Amy’s View and off-Broadway in Lonergan’s Lobby Hero. Hamilton’s Broadway credits include Brighton Beach Memoirs, Proof and The Coast of Utopia. Burns has appeared on Broadway in Billy Elliot: The Musical and off-Broadway in Lobby Hero. Pittu’s Broadway credits include Never Gonna Dance, The Coast of Utopia, Lovemusik and Is He Dead? Arkin has appeared on Broadway in I’m Not Rappaport and off-Broadway in Make Me.
