A starry cast is in negotiations for a modern film adaptation of Chekhov’s The Seagull, written and directed by Christian Camargo (The Hurt Locker, Dexter) according to Variety. Katie Holmes, two-time Tony winner Mark Rylance, Oscar winner William Hurt, Emmy winner Allison Janney, Russell Means, Jean Reno and Juliet Rylance are all in talks to join the project.
The film will be set in rural New England over Memorial Day weekend. Reckless desire will wreak havoc and make a family confront the volatile and fragile nature of love. Production is scheduled to begin this summer in upstate New York.
Janney will reportedly play Elizabeth, a movie star based on The Seagull character Irina Arkadina. Hurt will play her ailing brother, and Holmes will take on the temperamental daughter of the estate's caretaker. There is no word yet on which characters the other actors may play.
Juliet Rylance will produce the film with Barbara Romer, the founder and CEO of New Globe Theater.
