They’re best known for their MVP-quality play in the National Basketball League, but Larry Bird and Earvin “Magic” Johnson are currently gracing the Broadway stage—as portrayed by Broadway newcomers Tug Coker and Kevin Daniels—in the biographical drama Magic/Bird. Broadway.com resident artist Justin ‘Squigs’ Robertson recently took a seat at the Longacre Theatre to see the action live, then captured Coker (in Bird’s Boston Celtics uniform) and Daniels (dressed for play as an L.A. Laker) in action. See them live in Eric Simonson’s Magic/Bird!
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home. Click to e-mail Squigs. Photo by Matthew Murphy
