As another week on the Great White Way is wrapping up, and we’re looking back at all we’ve learned from our favorite shows and stars. Some stars revealed secret desires and casting news, both real and fantasy, made quite a splash. Read on to see our latest batch of Broadway lessons!
Cheyenne Jackson is S&M Dream Casting
We’re all about fantasy casting blockbusters around here, so we couldn't resist the book on everyone’s lips these days: Fifty Shades of Grey. After polling our readers, Cheyenne Jackson was their choice to play Christian Grey, the older millionaire who teaches young Anastasia Steele about sex and submission in his "Red Room of Pain." Makes sense; he’s got a steel-y, smoldering gaze and he's so great on 30 Rock! This is a comedy, right?
Chris Pine Could Get Hot on Broadway
Film star Chris Pine is in talks to join the upcoming revival of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, playing Brick opposite Scarlett Johansson as Maggie. Let’s be honest, they had us at “Chris Pine” and “Hot,” but don’t forget that Avengers star Jeremy Renner is also still on the short list! Might we suggest a Brick-off? Just tell them all Broadway auditions are held shirtless in Times Square. Either way, Johansson is a lucky lady.
Sutton Foster Dreamt of Being a Space Cadet
Sure, Sutton Foster’s dreams came true when she made it to Broadway, but it turns out she has another dream she has yet to realize. "I really wanted to go to space camp," she said on The Late Late Show, "and after the Challenger exploded I said I wanted to be an astronaut because I thought people might be afraid and I would be brave." Awww, little Sutton! Instead she's saving the world through tap dance, and here's hoping for a Bunheads in Space episode.
Denis O’Hare and Amy Adams are Having a Baby
The Baker’s Wife has her Baker! Tony winner Denis O’Hare has joined the cast of Into the Woods at Shakespeare in the Park, and he will be baking sweet, sweet bread with his onstage wife, Oscar nominee Amy Adams. Hold on, the Vampire King from True Blood is marrying Princess Giselle from Enchanted? Huh. Guess opposites really do attract.
The Les Miserables Movie Looks Pretty Damn Epic
As the Les Miz movie release date draws ever closer, we’ve been holding our breath and hoping it lives up to the very (very, very) high expectations of theater lovers. The first offical trailer seems promising. Hugh Jackman as a super heroic convict? Check. Adorable French street urchins? Check. Anne Hathaway all dirty, bald and hopeless, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne being young, pretty and in love? Check and check. Our only request: More Aaron Tveit, please (duh).
Jerry O’Connell Infected Wife Rebecca Romijn With the Theater Bug
Jerry O’Connell just made his Broadway debut in Seminar, and it looks like his theater love is seriously contagious. Now his sexy wife, film actress and model Rebecca Romijn, is going to tear it up as Swedish bombshell Ulla in The Producers at the Hollywood Bowl. Romijn can definitely "flaunt it," so we’re going to spend the next 15 minutes imagining Jerry saying, “And now: Rebecca dance!”
Michael Cumpsty Was a TV Pioneer
When End of the Rainbow Tony nominee Michael Cumpsty told Broadway.com about the best thing he ever won, we were surprised that it was something concrete, not conceptual. As a teenager in South Africa in 1976, he entered a contest and won a color television, "before TV was even introduced into the country, so I had [one] when TV arrived," he said. "It was very exciting." And we're guessing that made Cumpsty the most popular kid in the country
Aaron Lazar Looks Forward to Lycra
New Mamma Mia! star Aaron Lazar is always excited to be back on a Broadway stage, but there’s something extra special about his upcoming turn in the ABBA musical. Not only is it his first rock/pop musical, but “I get to wear spandex, and I get to wear a dance belt, which I haven’t worn since grad school," Lazar told Broadway.com. Mamma Mia, here we go again indeed!
Jane Krakowski Has Some Advice For Madonna
Tony winner Jane Krakowski grew up in Parsippany, but her parents made sure she didn’t grow up sounding like a New Jersey girl. Lately though, she’s noticed a bit of Brit slipping into her speech, thanks to fiancé Robert Godley. Is she taking a page from the Madonna faux-accent handbook? No way. “Girls from Jersey and Detroit shouldn’t have those accents,” she told Broadway.com. We agree, Jane, but we'll let you take it up with Queen Madge. We're right behind you, we swear.
Jeremy Jordan Knows When Not To Get Sexy
Newsies star Jeremy Jordan and fiancée Ashley Spencer are one gorgeous Broadway couple, but Jordan has no intention of steaming up the stage together. “I always tell Ashley we should do Urinetown together,” he told Broadway.com. “When you’re a couple and you play opposite each other it shouldn’t be like, really intimate because I think people get weird about that.” OK, fine Jeremy! As long as you're getting sexy with someone on stage, Broadway will allow it.
