Idina Menzel is gearing up to star as a new kind of Wicked Witch. Menzel will provide vocals alongside Kristen Bell in Disney’s upcoming animated film Frozen, according to EW.com. The movie will feature music by Tony winner Robert Lopez (Avenue Q, The Book of Mormon) and his wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez. Directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan), the film will be released in November 2013.
Frozen will be loosely based on Hans Christian Andersen’s story The Snow Queen. After the Snow Queen (Menzel) casts a spell that keeps the kingdom in perpetual winter, it is up to a young girl named Anna (Bell) to seek her out and break the curse. Still uncast is the role of Kristoff, a mountain climber who guides Anna on her journey to find the evil Snow Queen.
Menzel won a Tony in 2004 for her performance as future Witched Witch of the West Elphaba in Wicked. Her other Broadway credits include Rent and Aida. She has appeared on film and TV in Enchanted, Rent and Glee. Bell appeared on Broadway in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Crucible.
