The world premiere of The Anarchist, a new play written and directed by David Mamet, will play Broadway's Lyceum Theatre this fall. As previously announced the play, which stars Tony winner Patti LuPone and Oscar nominee Debra Winger, begins performances November 13. Opening night is set for December 2.
Set in a women’s prison, The Anarchist is a two-character play about an inmate with a radical past (LuPone) who asks the prison’s female warden (Winger) for parole. While Mamet is famous for keeping mum about his projects, a press announcement for the play described The Anarchist as a new play about passion, deception, religion and revolution.
The Anarchist is produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Howard and Janet Kagan.
