Emotional Creature, the latest work by Eve Ensler (The Vagina Monologues), is headed off Broadway after a world premiere production at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in California. Directed by Jo Bonney, with original music by Charl-Johan Lingenfelder, the production will begin performances on October 26 and open on November 12 at the Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre in the Pershing Square Signature Center.
The ensemble cast of Emotional Creature includes Ashley Bryant (A Free Man of Color), Molly Carden (The Bird and the Two-Ton Weight), Emily S. Grosland (off-Broadway debut), Joaquina Kalukango (Godspell, Hurt Village), Sade Namei (The Flying Latke) and Olivia Oguma (Mamma Mia!, Les Miserables). Based on Ensler's 2010 book, the play is described as a series of original monologues, stories and songs that explore what it means to be a girl—the joys and thrills, the rites of passage, the growing pains and the unique pressures. “Emotional Creature is about being a girl in the world in 2012 and about discovering the girl in each of us,” Ensler said in a statement.
The Emotional Creature creative team includes scenic and costume designer Myung Hee Cho, choreographer Luam, lighting designer Lap Chi Chu and projection designer Shawn Sagady. The show is being produced by Carole Black and Pat Mitchell and is not part of Signature Theatre Company's season.
