After a two-show day, Broadway’s pet-owning performers love nothing more than coming home to their number one fan: a loyal four-legged friend. In honor of the annual Broadway Barks dog and cat adoption event, coming up on July 14 in Shubert Alley, we asked stage couples to show their puppy love by telling us all about their furry pals.
ANDY KARL (Tommy DeVito in Jersey Boys) and Tony nominee ORFEH
What is your pet's name and breed?
Our pet’s name is Boo, otherwise known as Boo-Boo, and he is a Pomeranian-Chihuahua mix.
How did your pet get its name?
[Broadway animal trainer] Bill Berloni named him. We got him from Legally Blonde (where was known onstage as Elle Woods' Bruiser). He came with the name.
What is your pet's favorite pastime?
Lying around while chewing on rawhide bones and thinking about his glory days on Broadway.
Does your pet know any tricks?
He knows how to sit and bow. He’s a Broadway dog, so he poses for the camera on demand and he always knows where the camera is.
What's the funniest thing your pet has done?l
Orfeh: What’s funny, that no one will ever see, is that he always knows when Andy is on his way home.
A good 20 minutes before Andy gets home he just suddenly sits up, goes to the door and starts barking. That’s how I know Andy is on the way home. He has Andy-ESP.
What's the naughtiest thing your pet has done?
He’s not a naughty boy. He came pre-trained. He’s very willful. When he doesn't want to go outside he lets you know. He’ll run away and hide, he won’t let you pick him up and you’ll never find him.
Do you look like your pet?
Andy: I do! Even though I have dark hair for Jersey Boys, I’m a gingerhead and so is he.
