Helen Hobson will return to the role of Donna Sheridan in the hit ABBA musical Mamma Mia! in London beginning September 24. Hobson succeeds Sally Ann Triplet, who will depart the production September 22 to begin rehearsal for Viva Forever! Featuring music and lyrics by Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus and a book by Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia! is currently playing at the Prince of Whales Theatre through September 1, and will transfer to the West End’s Novello Theatre beginning September 6.
Hobson joins current cast members Joanna Monro as Rosie, Kim Ismay as Tanya, Gary Milner as Sam Carmichael, Neil Roberts as Harry Bright, James Gaddas as Bill Austin, Charlotte Wakefield as Sophie Sheridan and Andreas Gyllander as Sky. Claire Poyzer plays the role of Donna Sheridan at certain performances. Featuring a score of hit ABBA songs, Mamma Mia! tells the story of Sophie (Wakefield), a young girl who invites three men who could potentially be the father she never knew to her wedding in the Greek Islands—unbeknownst to her mother, Donna (Hobson). Mamma Mia! opened at the Prince Edward Theatre on April 6, 1999 before transferring to the Prince of Whales Theatre on June 9, 2004.
Hobson last played the role of Donna in 2007. Her additional London credits include Les Miserables, Chess, Lust, Passion, Heathcliff the Musical, Cinderella, The Lady in the Van, Educating Rita and Blood Brothers. Her film and TV credits include EastEnders, Heartbeat and Lovelorn.
