Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actress Glenn Close will provide the voice of The Giant for the Public Theater’s upcoming production of Into the Woods at Shakespeare in the Park. The Sondheim musical will star the previously announced Amy Adams (The Baker’s Wife), Donna Murphy (The Witch) and Denis O’Hare (The Baker). Directed by Timothy Sheader with co-direction by Liam Steel, Into the Woods begins previews July 23 at the Delacorte Theatre, with an official opening night on August 9. The production will play a limited engagement through August 25.
The production will also feature Jack Broderick (Narrator), Gideon Glick (Jack), Cooper Grodin (Rapunzel’s Prince), Ellen Harvey (Cinderella’s Stepmother), Ivan Hernandez (Cinderella’s Prince, Wolf), Tina Johnson (Red Ridinghood’s Granny), Josh Lamon (Steward), Bethany Moore (Florinda), Jessie Mueller (Cinderella), Jennifer Rias (Lucinda), Laura Shoop (Cinderella’s Mother), Tess Soltau (Rapunzel), Sarah Stiles (Little Red Ridinghood), Kristine Zbornik (Jack’s Mother) and Chip Zien (Mysterious Man). The ensemble of Into the Woods features Victoria Cook, Johnny Newcomb, Noah Radcliffe, and Eric R. Williams.
In Into the Woods, a witch’s curse condemns the Baker and his Wife to a life without children. They embark on a quest to find the four items required to break the spell: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. Will they succeed? And what happens after “happily ever after?”
Close has won Tony Awards for her roles in Sunset Boulevard, Death and the Maiden and The Real Thing. Her other Broadway roles include Love for Love, The Member of the Wedding, Barnun (Tony nomination), Benefactors and Rex. Among her many famous films are The Big Chill, The World According to Garp, Dangerous Liaisons, Fatal Attraction, The Natural and Albert Nobbs, all of which earned her Oscar nominations. She has won Emmy and Golden Globe Awards for her work on the TV series Damages.
