Extra! Extra! The dancing newsboys of Broadway are about to meet a strange fate. Upright Citizens Brigade is taking aim at Disney hit musical Newsies. On July 25, the group will present Newsadoozies: A Man-Eating Musical at their downtown theater. Directed by Christopher Gladysz and Lauren Adams, this very un-Disney parody introduces the newsies into a world of thieves, pimps and “she-males.” Newsadoozies features a book and lyrics by Brian Glidewell and Marcy Jarreau and music by Kevin Carter.
According to UCB's website, "Newsadoozies: A Man-Eating Musical is a new musical chronicling the news boys of New York City in their adventures of selling newspapers, finding love, and getting eaten by the members of an ancient evil cannibalistic sex cult."
The show will star Brian Glidewell, Dan Hodapp, Aaron Jackson, Megan Maes, Michael Martin, Katie Schorr and Stephanie Streisand.
Disney’s Newsies is based on the true story of the Newsboy Strike of 1899. The musical follows Jack Kelly, a young newsboy in New York City who leads a strike against powerful newspaper publishers, including William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. Newsies currently plays Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre.
The Upright Citizens Brigade is an award-winning sketch comedy troupe founded in Chicago by TV’s Amy Pohler along with Matt Besser, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh. The company is known for its improv, stand-up and sketch comedy shows, which often feature rising talent from its signature training center.
