The bittersweet musical Dogfight centers on the unlikely romance between a young Marine and a shy, plump waitress he meets the night before shipping out to Vietnam in the fall of 1963. Broadway.com resident artist Justin ‘Squigs’ Robertson headed to the off-Broadway premiere production of the show, starring Derek Klena and Lindsay Mendez. Setting his portrait in the San Francisco bar where the title contest (to choose the evening’s ugliest date) is set, Squigs captures Klena and Mendez as well as co-stars Annaleigh Ashford, Josh Segarra, James Moye and Nick Blaemire. To experience Dogfight in person, head to Second Stage before August 19.
About the Artist: With a desire to celebrate the magic of live theater and those who create it, and with a deep reverence for such touchstones as the work of Al Hirschfeld and the wall at Sardi’s, Squigs is happy and grateful to be among those carrying on the traditions where theater and caricature meet. He was born and raised in Oregon, lived in Los Angeles for quite a long time and now calls New York City his home. Click to e-mail Squigs. Photo by Matthew Murphy
