Jack Lowden, James McArdle and the West End cast of Chariots of Fire welcomed the Olympic torch to the Gielgud Theatre on July 26 as it made its way toward Stratford for the opening ceremony of the Olympics in London. Set during the 1924 Paris Olympics, Mike Bartlett's stage adaptation of Chariots of Fire is based on the true story of runners Eric Liddell (Lowden) and Harold Abrahams (McArdle) as they race to become the fastest man on earth. Vangelis, who won an Academy Award for his score to the 1981 film version of Chariots of Fire and wrote original music for the stage production, performed outside the theater alongside the cast to commemorate the once-in-a-lifetime event. Let the games begin!
