Complete casting has been announced for Manhattan Theatre Club’s upcoming Broadway production of a new version of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People by Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Starring previously announced four-time Tony winner Boyd Gaines and Golden Globe winner Richard Thomas and directed by Tony winner Doug Hughes (Doubt, The Royal Family), the production begins previews on September 4. Opening night is set for September 27 at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre.
In addition to Gaines as Dr. Thomas Stockmann and Thomas as Mayor Peter Stockman, the cast will include Maïté Alina as Petra Stockmann, Gerry Bamman (The Merchant of Venice) as Aslaksen, Gaines' real-life wife Kathleen McNenny (Death of a Salesman) as Catherine Stockmann, Randall Newsome (Inherit The Wind) as Horster, John Procaccino (Blood and Gifts) as Hovstad, Michael Siberry (Mrs. Warren’s Profession, The Sound of Music) as Morton Kiil and James Waterston (Parents Evening) as Billing.
When Dr. Thomas Stockmann (Gaines) discovers toxic contamination in the water used at the local baths, he expects to be hailed as a hero. But since the baths are the town’s main source of revenue, the community fights to silence him and Dr. Stockmann learns that there are forces more powerful than truth.
An Enemy of the People features scenic design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by Catherine Zuber, lighting design by Ben Stanton, music and sound design by David Van Tieghem, fight direction by J. David Brimmer and hair and wig design by Tom Watson.
