The Broadway production of Peter Quilter’s End of the Rainbow has announced a closing date of August 19. Starring 2012 Tony nominee Tracie Bennett as Judy Garland, the play began previews at the Belasco Theatre on March 19 and opened on April 2. End of the Rainbow will have played a total of 176 performances upon closing.
Bennett will reprise her acclaimed performance at the Los Angeles Music Center from March 12 through April 13, 2013, and is set to star in a film adaptation of the play. A national tour of End of the Rainbow is also in the works.
Set in the final months of Garland’s life, just before she plays London’s Talk of the Town nightclub in December 1968, End of the Rainbow presents the star preparing for one last comeback aided by a much younger fiancé (Tom Pelphrey) and her trusted pianist (Tony nominee Michael Cumpsty).
In spite of mostly stellar reviews for Bennett's performance, End of the Rainbow has struggled at the box office, earning just under $220,000 and playing to 43.48% of capacity for the week ending July 29.
