Mary McCann will play the title role in Atlantic Theater Company’s forthcoming New York premiere of Harper Regan, written by Olivier Award winner Simon Stephens. The play will begin previews at Atlantic’s main stage Linda Gross Theater on September 20 and open on October 10 for a limited engagement through October 28, directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch.
McCann will be joined by Vandit Blatt, Christopher Innvar (Porgy and Bess, 110 in the Shade), Mahira Kakkar, Jordan Lage (Storefront Church), Madeleine Martin (August: Osage County), Mary Beth Peil (Follies, TV’s The Good Wife), Gareth Saxe (The Lion King), Peter Scanavino (Shining City), John Sharian (Bluebird) and Stephen Tyrone Williams (My Children! My Africa!).
Harper Regan centers on the title character (McCann), who decides to walk away from her husband (Saxe), her daughter (Martin) and her home one strange evening. She tells no one where she’s going or whether she’s ever coming back, tossing family, history and fate straight up in the air. The play premiered in 2008 at the UK’s National Theatre starring Lesley Sharp.
A founding member of Atlantic, McCann has appeared in the company's productions of Bluebird (also by Stephens), Almost an Evening, Body Awareness, Spring Awakening, The Cherry Orchard, The Night Heron, The Hiding Place, This Thing of Darkness, The Beginning of August, Wolf Lullaby, The Water Engine, Edmond and Dangerous Corner, among others. Her Broadway credits include The Old Neighborhood, Our Town and Search and Destroy.
Harper Regan will feature scenic design by Rachel Hauck, costume design by Sarah J. Holden and original music and sound design by Fitz Patton.
