Symphonic Sondheim and An Evening With Paulo Szot are on tap for the New York Philharmonic’s forthcoming season at Avery Fisher Hall. Symphonic Sondheim, which will feature a selection of Stephen Sondheim’s iconic musical theater songs, is set for January 20, 2013. An Evening with Paulo Szot will be presented on June 4, 2013.
In Symphonic Sondheim, the New York Philharmonic will play symphonic suites of the legendary composer’s greatest melodies, including works from Sunday in the Park with George, The Enclave, Pacific Overtures, Stavisky, Passion and Sweeney Todd. Sondheim is the winner of eight Tony Awards, including a special lifetime achievement award.
An Evening with Paulo Szot showcases the Tony-winning actor as he pulls material from Brazil, the opera stage, his concert repertoire and Broadway. The concert will feature songs by Maurice Ravel and Cole Porter, as well as selections from musicals including Gigi and Man of La Mancha. Szot earned a Tony Award for his performance in the 2008 revival of South Pacific.
As previously announced, the New York Philharmonic will also present a concert staging of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel from February 27, 2013 through March 2. The production will be directed by Jim Brennan and conducted by Rob Fisher.
