Former Spice Girls singer Melanie Chisholm (better known as Mel C or Sporty Spice) is becoming quite immersed in the world of musical theater, and the pop star now has her sights set on Broadway. In addition to starring as Mary Magdalene in the upcoming U.K. arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar, Chisholm will release Stages, a solo album of show tunes, on September 10. She then hopes to fulfill her Broadway dreams by starring in another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, Evita.
“I do have an ambition to work on Broadway in a musical,” Chisholm told The Daily Mail. “I'd love to play the role of Evita.”
Evita charts the rise and fall of Eva Peron, the one-time charismatic and glamorous young First Lady of Argentina, and includes songs such as “Buenos Aires,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall” and “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina.” The current Broadway production stars fellow '90s pop star Ricky Martin as Che, Tony winner Michael Cerveris as Juan Peron and Argentine star Elena Roger as Eva Peron.
Chisholm’s album Stages will feature popular show tunes such as "Maybe This Time"(Cabaret), "Another Hundred People" (Company), "Ain't Got No/I Got Life" (Hair) and "My Funny Valentine" (Babes in Arms), as well as a duet of "I Know Him So Well" (Chess) with fellow Spice Girl Emma Bunton.
