Performances are set to begin on September 4 for Manhattan Theatre Club’s Broadway production of An Enemy of the People, featuring Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s translation of the classic drama by Henrik Ibsen. Four-time Tony Award winner Boyd Gaines and Emmy winner Richard Thomas headline the revival at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre, opening on September 27 under Doug Hughes’ direction.
Co-starring with Gaines and Thomas are Maite Alina, Gerry Bamman, Kathleen McNenny, Randall Newsome, John Procaccino, Michael Siberry and James Watersto. Rounding out the cast are Mike Boland, Victoria Frings, Andrew Hovelson, John Robert Tillotson and Ray Virta.
Described as a fast-paced, two-hour thriller, An Enemy of the People centers on Dr. Thomas Stockmann (Gaines), who discovers a toxic secret that threatens the health of his entire community. The doctor expects to be hailed as a hero, but his brother, Mayor Peter Stockmann (Thomas), believes the information will destroy the town, forcing the men into a passionate confrontation of political will and personal ethics.
