Lavon Fisher-Wilson will join the cast of Broadway's Newsies on September 11 at the Nederlander Theater. Fisher-Wilson will take on the role of Medda Larkin, replacing original star Capathia Jenkins who departed the production on September 9. Nicholas Lampiasi and Jake Lucas will also join the cast, alternating in the role of Les.
Set in New York City at the turn of the century, Newsies follows Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged boys, who dreams of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when publishing titans Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies newsies from across the city to strike. Featuring music by Alan Menken, lyrics by Jack Feldman and a book by Harvey Fierstein, Newsies opened on March 29 and received eight Tony Award nominations.
Fisher-Wilson has appeared on Broadway in Chicago, The Color Purple and Lysistrata Jones. Her regional credits include Once on This Island and Jelly's Last Jam. Newsies marks the Broadway debut for both Lampiasi and Lucas.
The cast of Newsies also currently includes Corey Cott as Jack Kelly, John Dossett as Joseph Pulitzer, Kara Lindsay as Katherine Plumber, Ben Fankhauser as Davey and Andrew Keenan-Bolger as Crutchie.
