Tony Award winner John Benjamin Hickey has landed a role on NBC’s The New Normal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series, which stars Broadway alums Andrew Rannells, Justin Bartha and Hickey’s former Normal Heart co-star Ellen Barkin, is also adding Leisha Hailey (The L Word) and Constance Zimmer (Entourage) for guest spots.
Hickey, Hailey and Zimmer will all appear in the seventh episode of the season. Hickey will play a “pivotal” character, though details are scarce. Hailey and Zimmer will guest as Victoria and Tiffany, respectively, a lesbian couple who are good friends with Bryan (Rannells) and David (Bartha).
Hickey won a Tony Award in 2011 for his performance in The Normal Heart. His previous Broadway credits include Mary Stuart, The Crucible, Cabaret and Love! Valour! Compassion!. He also stars as Sean Tolkey on Showtime’s The Big C.
The New Normal follows a gay couple and the surrogate mother they’ve chosen to carry their baby. The series, co-created by Glee’s Ryan Murphy and Ali Adler, airs Tuesdays on NBC.
