Before performances even begin, Classic Stage Company's Ivanov, starring Ethan Hawke and Joely Richardson, has extended for two weeks. The CSC production is now set to conclude December 9 instead of November 25. The revival of the Anton Chekov classic begins previews October 19, with opening night set for November 4.
Written by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov in 1887, Ivanov follows a governmental official (Hawke) who loses his zest for life as he deals with his increasingly complicated surroundings, including a suffering wife (Richardson), rising debt and turbulent relationships with the people around him. The play co-stars Glenn Fitzgerald, Roberta Maxwell, George Morfogen, Juliet Rylance, Jonathan Marc Sherman and Louis Zorich.
Ivanov is presented at CSC as part of the company’s Chekhov Cycle. The production is translated by Carol Rocamora, directed by Austin Pendleton and features scenic design by Santo Loquasto, costume design by Marco Piemontese, lighting by Keith Parham and original music and sound by Ryan Rumery.
