Julia Murney, Kara Lindsay, Ron Raines, Lindsay Mendez and more will perform the songs of Alan Menken as a tribute to the prolific musical theater and film composer. Menken, whose Broadway and film scores include Newsies, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, will be honored by the Encompass New Opera Theatre at the National Arts Club in New York City on October 21.
In addition to Murney, Lindsay, Raines and Mendez, the evening will include performances and readings by Lisa Livesay (Wicked), Hercules lyricist David Zippel, cabaret performers Scott Coulter, Klea Blackhurst and Jason Graae, Tituss Burgess (The Little Mermaid), Newsies lyricist Jack Feldman, Sister Act and The Little Mermaid lyricist Glenn Slater, composer/lyricist Maury Yeston, Karen Ziemba (Contact) and more.
Menken earned the 2012 Tony Award for Best Original Score for Newsies. In addition to Newsies, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, Menken’s Broadway scores include Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act and Leap of Faith. His Disney film scores include Aladdin, Pocahontas, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Home on the Range, Enchanted, Tangled and Hercules. Menken has been awarded eight Academy Awards, ten Grammys and seven Golden Globes.
