It’s been two long years since New York audiences were last treated to the clear and powerful voice of three-time Tony nominee Sherie Rene Scott. Now Scott is back and better than ever in Piece of Meat at 54 Below. As in her Tony-nominated show Everyday Rapture, Scott gives fans a glimpse into her life and, with her effortless humor, blurs the line between truth and fiction. (The title refers to her complicated relationship with vegetarianism.) The night soars because of the eclectic set list compilid by Scott and music director Todd Almond. You may not know most of the tunes going in, but you will definitely hum them walking out. Hearing Scott perform Joni Mitchell is practically a religious experience, and her rendition of “Are You Havin’ Any Fun?” makes fans long to see her back on stage in a musical. But the highlight of the show is an original song by Almond: During “Oh Sean” the entire evening comes together; the brilliant actress and the unforgettable voice combine to create an entire world through song. Don’t miss your chance to experience Scott’s transformative new work, Piece of Meat, running at 54 Below through October 27. (Inside scoop for all you Everyday Rapture fans: Lindsay Mendez and Betsy Wolfe will join Scott for her 11 PM shows on October 19, 20, 26 and 27.)
