Ok, so the project isn’t officially a go, but Broadway stars James Barbour and Jill Paice—leads of the ill-fated Broadway musical Rebecca—are hoping the now defunct show will see the light of day after all, albeit in a much different format.
When Broadway.com asked what the actors wanted for Christmas, both stars were quick to the punch: “Can we get a Broadway show?” joked Barbour, to which Paice added, “Too bad that didn’t happen!”
The duo now wants to take matters into their own hands. “We’re doing it, Rebecca: The Musical,” explained Barbour of their dream for an “off-off-off Broadway” production. “It’s all mime! There’s no music, so it’s going to be inexpensive.” Money has, of course, been the main root of Rebecca’s uphill battle, plagued by mysterious investors and monumental lawsuits.
In addition to the mime extravaganza, Barbour wished for jelly beans in his stocking, while Paice went with the classic “peace on earth” response, a lofty dream that may be just as far off as the unlucky musical. Barbour sounded an upbeat note, however, noting, “The way [lead producer] Ben Sprecher is pushing for it, I betcha Rebecca’s going to happen first.”
The Rebecca cast will reunite for a holiday show at 54 Below on December 3, and Barbour is set to ring in the rest of the season with a series of Christmas concerts at Sardi's beginning December 6.
