Lincoln Center Theater’s off-Broadway production of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is getting a one-week extension at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre. Christopher Durang’s new comedy, which opened on November 12 and had been scheduled to close on January 13, 2013, will now give its final performance on January 20.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike stars Sigourney Weaver, David Hyde Pierce, Kristine Nielsen, Genevieve Angelson, Shalita Grant and Billy Magnussen. The play borrows characters and themes from Chekhov to tell the modern-day story of a family spending the weekend at their farmhouse in Bucks County, PA. While Masha (Weaver) has been traveling the world as a movie star, siblings Vanya (Pierce) and Sonia (Nielsen) have kept the home fires burning. Now Masha is home with a boy toy named Spike (Magnussen) in tow, threatening to sell the family home.
Durang’s play is directed by Nicholas Martin and has sets by David Korins, costumes by Emily Rebholz, lighting by Justin Townsend and sound and original music by Mark Bennett.
