George Wendt has joined the Broadway cast of Truman Capote's Breakfast at Tiffany’s as Joe Bell, the proprietor of a local bar. The reworked stage adaptation of the novel will begin preview performances on March 4, 2013 at the Cort Theater. Opening night is set for March 20.
Written by Tony winner Richard Greenberg, Breakfast at Tiffany’s is set in New York City in 1943. The show follows Fred (Cory Michael Smith), a young writer from Louisiana who meets and falls head over heels for Holly Golightly (Emilia Clarke), a charming, vivacious and enigmatic good-time girl. But Fred is poor, and Holly's other suitors include a playboy millionaire and the future president of Brazil. As war rages on in Europe, Holly begins to fall in love with Fred, just as her mysterious past catches up with her.
Wendt most recently appeared as Dean Halsey in Re-Animator The Musical. He is well-known for his role as Norm on the TV series Cheers. Wendt appeared on Broadway in Elf, Hairspray and Art. His other film and TV credits include Forever Young, The Little Rascals, Man of the House, Spin City, Frasier and Hot in Cleveland.
Breakfast at Tiffany's will be directed by Sean Mathias. The production will feature scenic design by Derek McLane, costume design by Colleen Atwood, lighting design by Peter Kaczorowski, projection design by Wendall K. Harrington and music and sound by Rob Milburn & Michael Bodeen.
