New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira is trading baseball for Broadway on January 29, when he’ll make a cameo in the ‘80s rock musical Rock of Ages. Teixeira will have a walk-on role as a bartender in the show’s fictional Los Angeles nightspot, the Bourbon Room. We’ll take a whiskey sour!
“The rumors are true," Teixeira told Broadway.com. "Tonight I’ll be making my Broadway debut in Rock of Ages as 'Mark, the Bourbon Room Bartender.' I’ve always been a huge fan of Broadway, so when a producer from the show approached us with the idea, it was a no-brainer. I’m a child of the '80s. I rocked out as a kid in Severna Park, Maryland, to some of the great '80s rock bands...and still do, as many Yankees fans know. Twisted Sister’s “I Wanna Rock”, a song in Rock of Ages, is one of my at-bat walk up songs! I’ve heard the show is an absolute blast, and the cast is crazy talented. I’m excited to rock out with them on stage tonight. I hear they’re going to have me decked out in some wild '80s garb, so we’ll see what I get surprised with when I get there!"
Directed by Kristin Hanggi, Rock of Ages features a book by Chris D’Arienzo and a score of classic ‘80s rock hits, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “The Final Countdown,” “Any Way You Want It,” “Nothin’ But a Good Time” and “I Wanna Rock." Teixiera will take the stage alongside Rock of Ages stars Justin Matthew Sargent, Kate Rockwell, Joey Calveri, Genson Blimline, Adam Dannheisser, Cody Scott Lancaster, Josephine Rose Roberts, Teresa Stanley and Paul Schoeffler.
Teixeira signed his contract with the Yankees in 2008 and has earned five Gold Glove Awards and three Silver Slugger Awards. He was a member of the 2009 World Series championship team and was voted an All-Star in 2005 and 2009. Something tells us Teixeira's Broadway debut will be a home run!
