After a sold-out run off-Broadway, Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike will transfer to Broadway’s Golden Theatre beginning on March 5. Directed by Nicholas Martin, the Chekhov-inspired comedy will reunite the show's off-Broadway cast, including Sigourney Weaver, Kristine Nielsen and Tony winner David Hyde Pierce. The Broadway production will open on March 14 and play a 17-week engagement.
In addition to Weaver, Nielsen and Pierce, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike features Genevieve Angelson as Nina, Shalita Grant as Cassandra and Billy Magnussen as Spike.
The play borrows characters and themes from Chekhov's work to tell the modern-day story of a family spending the weekend at their farmhouse in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. While Masha (Weaver) has been traveling the world as a movie star, siblings Vanya (Pierce) and Sonia (Nielsen) have kept the home fires burning. Now Masha is home with a boy toy named Spike (Magnussen) in tow, threatening to sell the family home.
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike features sets by David Korins, costumes by Emily Rebholz, lighting by Justin Townsend and sound and original music by Mark Bennett.
The comedy first premiered at New Jersey’s McCarter Theatre in September 2012. The production then transferred off-Broadway to Lincoln Center Theater’s Mitzi E. Newhouse Theatre where it played November 12, 2012 through January 20, 2013.
