Tickets are now on sale for the Broadway transfer of Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Led by Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver and Emmy and Tony winner David Hyde Pierce, the comedy recently concluded a sold-out run at Lincoln Center, and will begin performances on March 5 at its new home, the Golden Theatre. The show will officially open on March 14 and is scheduled to play a 17-week engagement.
In addition to Weaver and Pierce the entire off-Broadway cast of Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike reunites for its Rialto run, including Kristine Nielsen, Genevieve Angelson, Shalita Grant and Billy Magnussen.
Inspired by Chekhov, the play takes classic characters and plotlines from the dramatist, and transports them into modern day Pennsylvania. Vanya (Pierce) and his stepsister Sonia (Nielsen) have lived their entire lives in their family’s farmhouse. While they cared for their ailing parents, their sister Masha (Weaver) has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia trapped and regretful. Their soothsayer/cleaning woman, Cassandra (Grant), keeps warning them about terrible things in the future, which include a sudden visit from Masha and her twentysomething boy toy Spike (Magnussen).
