Tony nominee Michael Cumpsty will once again accompany Tracie Bennett on the piano when the Los Angeles engagement of End of the Rainbow begins performances on March 12. The limited run of Peter Quilter’s acclaimed drama opens March 20 at the Center Theatre Group/Ahmanson Theatre, and plays through April 21.
Directed once again by Terry Johnson, End of the Rainbow will feature Cumpsty recreating his Tony-nominated role as Judy Garland’s (Bennett) loyal pianist Anthony. The L.A. production will also feature Broadway standby Erik Heger as Garland’s young fiancé Mickey Deans and Miles Anderson as the BBC Interview, Porter and ASM.
Set in the final months of Garland’s life in 1968, End of the Rainbow presents the star preparing for one last comeback as she plays London’s Talk of the Town nightclub. As she readies for her concerts she's aided by a much younger fiancé (Heger) and her trusted pianist (Cumpsty).
End of the Rainbow opened at the Belasco Theatre on April 2 and ran through August 19. The play features set and costume design by William Dudley, lighting design by Christopher Akerlind and sound design by Gareth Owen.
