The Broadway transfer of Christopher Durang’s Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike begins performances at the Golden Theatre on March 5. Headlined by Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver ,Emmy and Tony winner David Hyde Pierce and frequent Durang collaborator Kristine Nielsen, the modern-day comedy officially opens on March 14, and is scheduled to play a 17-week engagement.
In addition to Weaver, Pierce and Nielsen, the Broadway cast also features Genevieve Angelson, Shalita Grant and Billy Magnussen, all of whom appeared in the show’s sold-out off-Broadway run at Lincoln Center Theater.
Inspired by the works of Chekhov, the play takes the playwright's classic characters and plotlines and transports them into modern day Pennsylvania. Vanya (Pierce) and his stepsister Sonia (Nielsen) have lived their entire lives in their family’s farmhouse. While they cared for their ailing parents, their sister Masha (Weaver) has been gallivanting around the world as a successful actress and movie star, leaving Vanya and Sonia trapped and regretful. Their soothsayer/cleaning woman, Cassandra (Grant), keeps warning them about terrible things in the future, which include a sudden visit from Masha and her twentysomething boy toy Spike (Magnussen).
